Join us on the field for our Farmland Soil Reclamation Workshop Series
Join ARC&D & UT Extension for our May Farmland Soil Reclamation Series! You may attend one, two, or all three workshops. Farm addresses will be sent to you via email after registration has been completed. Wear outdoor weather apropriate clothing and bring a water bottle.
- Sign in: Upon arrival at the sign in/welcome table and grab a snack. We will kick off the day with introductions from presenters and attendees.
- Site walk: During this time we will discuss the issues facing each site, the soil amendments that were added (wood chips, mulch, biochar, chicken litter, etc.), the seed combination that was chosen and why (using oat with crab grass because the larger oat seed is able to break through hard layers of silt to allow crab grass to establish), methods of soil amendment/seed application (manure spreader, broadcast, direct sow, etc.), potential invasive plant identification and management, and the differences in the treated area and surrounded untreated areas.
- Farmers can benefit from this workshop by gaining an understanding of what is happening to disturbed soils, the barriers these various presentations of disturbance create to proper production and harvest (scoured, cobblestone, sandy, silty, clay soils), best practice techniques being learned and utilized, resources that are available, and local experts who can help.
These workshops will look more like a mini-field day and there will not be much by way of hands-on learning or volunteer opportunity, as has been the case with our past Tennessee Stream Team riverbank stabilization workshop series.
